It’s about feeling good about being in a gym and engagement. People look better and feel better and are more energized when there is an abundance of natural light.

Typically gyms are located in the middle of the school and don’t have a lot of access to natural light. We challenged that thinking. This isn’t super competitive pro-ball where you have to make every shot count; it’s about feeling good about being in a gym and interaction. Kids feel and behave better and are more energized when it is bright and there is an abundance of natural light. We offset the drawbacks of occasional glare by adding motorized solar shades and blackout drapes when the gym becomes a theatre.
Kids that otherwise may not have been that keen to do sports now want to be in there playing. It is located right off the atrium at the central nub and therefore becomes a part of the culture of the school. It isn’t a smelly place at the end of the hall. When you walk into it, you just feel good.
