Most schools have one gym, but Bill Crothers is a magnet school specializing in sports so they needed 6 gyms, 2 of which are competition grade. Given the centrality of sports to the school, the gyms are located at the front door. The main gym even has a broadcast booth. The weight rooms are adjacent to the main gym with views into it and there are change rooms on both the 1st and 3rd floors. Since the facility is used for national and international competition, we have designed the building to facilitate the protection and supervision of the athletes.
The gyms are fitted with windows so they connect into and are a part of the life of the school. This two-way viewpoint provides good natural light and provides great views outside onto the playing fields.
Sports are loud and, to help the students concentrating in the classrooms, we placed storage rooms and other non-public rooms between the gyms and the classrooms to act as a sound buffer. We furthered mitigated noise by using sound absorbent material. Placing the classrooms in the academic wing, reduces the concern for acoustical disruptions. The sound from the gyms adds to the athletic axis’ environment, but the academic wing is protected from distractions.
