Muskoka Falls Elementary

This gym has been designed with the health and comfort of its users in mind. It has good natural light, a cushioned floor that is good for physical activity, and acoustical considerations dampen shrill sounds but still allow for an exciting atmosphere.

The Muskoka Falls Gym is a standard size, 3300 sq ft, with an eight metre ceiling; it’s positioned along the south side of the school. Despite this south wall generally being “closed” to daylight we introduced daylight into the Gym with two floor-to-ceiling windows (east and west facing). In each we used diffused glazing above to block glare while at the base it is transparent.

The windows provide a visual orientation for students that is both energizing and calming. To know where you are relative to site and the time of day is very reassuring – especially for young children.

The health of the children is an important Board objective. This is demonstrated by the Board’s investment in a proper sports floor, something to better cushion the impact on their knees. As an added bonus, the floor improves the gym’s acoustic properties. In addition, we added acoustic tiles on the wall to dampen the harsher sounds that the Gym and its activities naturally generate. The structural deck that spans the ceiling reduces echo.
