“All of the necessary tools are here which draws in outside community groups who host their own theatre and other events in the space.”
Doug Snyder, Principal
The cafetorium is the active student commons and principal place of gathering. The large curtain wall of glass allows you to immediately connect with the heartbeat of school as you approach from the Atrium. This sense of transparency fosters social and community engagement, allows for passive supervision and is a deterrent to bullying.
Originally, the Board wanted a separate theatre but the budget would not support a single purpose space. Our solution was to amp up the technology and combine it with the cafeteria and stage to create a multi-purpose, dynamic space that, when located near the atrium, can be used and enjoyed by students, the school and often by other community groups. All of the necessary tools are here which draws in outside community groups who host their own theatre and other events in the space.
There was no need to install the usual intricate catwalk system for students to control lighting. A state of the art lighting and audio system can be controlled entirely from the ground with an iPhone or iPad. The ComTech room is adjacent to this space which allows easy access to support and connection to programming.
The cafetorium benefits from being a space flooded with daylight, with views to the commons, library and outdoors . When used as a theatre, a more insular, dim/dark atmosphere is created by shades installed to cover the windows. Seating can easily be stored away to maximize the flexibility of this multi-use space.
