The Kindergarten is located by the School’s entrance, adjacent to the Daycare. It is a self contained room with bathrooms, storage and access to an outdoor play area. The space is designed for their body size: the benches, cubbies, coat hooks are all at their scale. The floor is carpeted for acoustics and is soft and comfortable for the kids to kneel on. It’s a simple, economic yet effective space that fits the Ministry’s guidelines.

We pared down the building to its essentials and used the savings to make special places; the best example of this is the Kindergarten is the bay window. The feeling generated by being in the bay window is wonderful. Educators have told us that it’s important for children to have unique personal spaces, places where they can be on their own for awhile.

The bay window is a place designed exclusively for children. The sill height is 12” and the ceiling reaches only 3’ up. It is a little box that punches out of the school so they feel like they are outside of the school in a looking out.

The Kindergarten space is and feels safe which that gives the parents confidence that the school is the best place for their child. The room is shaped to be easy to keep clean and organized by the teacher.
