“Broadening the accessibility to information and communication only serves to break down any barriers. All of a sudden it is about a future as opposed to a past.”

Paul Stevens, Senior Principal

Increased access to technology at Superior Heights was important for the Board who anticipates a future focused on laptop use.  The increased integration of technology is more than just a desire to be plugged in; it is about establishing connections and finding opportunities to communicate the values, activities and priorities of the school and give students a way to connect with each other and the world.

Wireless is available throughout and it was key that students have the ability to charge up their laptops or iPads easily. We went to great lengths to ensure we located a lot of access to power drops in social spaces like the atrium, library, even in the gymnasium.  There is a higher level of access to power those devices than you would typically find in any school.

It was also important that major spaces like the atrium, gym and cafeteria have the ability to project video.  A very popular program in the school is Communications Technology, which lets students to create their own videos and graphic art. Within the Communications Lab there is even a small TV and audio studio that allows them to broadcast their work.  Morning announcements aren’t just a crackly voice on the loud speaker but now can be very dynamic and multidimensional.  There are small broadcast panels throughout the school that are always putting out content.

What may seem like fancy technology bells and whistles, is actually about connecting two, once competitive school populations throughout the day –to each other, their school and the community. It keeps them engaged and excited to be a part of a great new school in an excellent new facility. Broadening the accessibility to information and communication only serves to break down any barriers. All of a sudden it is about a future as opposed to a past.
