St. Pius X Catholic

“Placement of the new school on this site creates a courtyard setting that emphasizes the adjacent church with views from all classrooms and a learning resource area.”

Greg Poste, Project Architect

A new elementary school was constructed on the site of an existing school, Wood Street Elementary, that was deemed prohibitive to repair and subsequently demolished.  The site is situated in an established residential neighbourhood with single family housing to the east and south; the St. Pius X Catholic church directly across the street; highway #403 to the north; and service driveways of the adjacent strip commercial plazas to the west. Placement of the new school on this site creates a courtyard setting that places emphasis and focus to the adjacent church with direct views from all classrooms and a learning resource area.

The single storey kindergarten wing is situated at the front of the site and aligns to adjacent single family homes creating an appropriate scale and context.  Pedestrian and motor vehicle circulation routes were carefully designed to avoid any crossover, and busing is separated to allow direct access to school play areas.  A ‘buffer’ was established between the commercial zoning by minimizing school placement and interior views to this area.  Noise from the busy highway was addressed by placing the school as far a distance as possible away, and orientating all interior service spaces toward to the highway building elevation.
