Alton Village Public

The “pat and ride” allows children to move directly from the vehicle into a secured supervised play area.

Avinash Garde, Principal

The kindergarten or “early learning” spaces at Alton are really about the transition from the family to teacher responsibility; a handing off of the caregiver relationship.

Access to the early learning spaces are grouped along a continuous drop off from the curb side where they can leave the vehicle or pathway and  proceed right into the secure outdoor play area. The minute the child enters that play space, they are in the responsible control of the teacher.  I call it a “pat and ride”. We considered not only the child’s drop off but also the driving ability of those doing the drop off. It could be an older grandparent or someone with visual acuity problems; the weather could be a problem or driving a car they are not familiar with.  We wanted to create the safest flow of traffic which is very simple, clear where you are supposed to be, and where nobody has to back up.
